Abstract

Saginaw Gold is a pale yellow fleshed potato cultivar bred at Michigan State University and selected in Ontario, Canada for consistently producing high quality potato chips and french fries after storage. Chip color of Saginaw Gold has surpassed that of standard storage chipping cultivars such as Norchip while achieving similar yields. Saginaw Gold produced the best colored chips in the Ontario Regional Trials for four consecutive years (1983–1986). French fry quality is equivalent to that of Russet Burbank and Shepody but tuber size and fry length are smaller.

Specific gravities in Ontario, have averaged between 1.078 and 1.088. Saginaw Gold rarely develops symptoms of virus diseases when grown for repeated generations under high disease pressure from potato leaf roll virus (PLRV) and potato viruses X (PVX) and Y (PVY).

Compendio
