Family and skin-type effects on storage losses in a potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) breeding population

Abstract

Full-sib russet and smooth-skinned selections from each of thirty-two families were evaluated for storage losses due to shrink (weight loss and rot). Smooth-skinned selections showed slightly less weight loss during one of the two storage seasons but skin type did not influence losses due to rot. Family influence on storage losses due to both weight loss and rot was significant. Selection of skin type to improve storability may be marginally effective, but selection within families with good storability should provide rapid improvement.

Compendio
