Abstract
Alcide L™, Exspo™ and Incyt™, three disinfectants recommended for plant tissue culture laboratories, and sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) were evaluated for disinfecting potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTV) from knives and tissue-homogenizing equipment. Only sodium hypochlorite was found effective except for polytrons where two water rinses were sufficient. A concentration of 2 or 3% sodium hypochlorite was more effective than 1%. The ability to disinfect was not due to the pH differences of solutions tested.
