Abstract

A successional vegetation mosaic occurring on a prehistoric lava field of the Hekla volcano is described. The unique lava formation is associated with two vegetation types, distinct floristically as well as phytosociologically. In one vegetation type crytogams dominate; the other is dominated by small leaved graminoids and chamaephytic plants.
