Summary

The average yield of marketable potatoes was increased significantly in organic soil by increasing the application rate of N from 55 pounds per acre to 110 pounds, but the specific gravity of the tubers was decreased. Method of nitrogen placement did not affect yields significantly. Urea used as a foliar spray was not effective in increasing yields.

The nitrate release rate, as measured by growth chamber and laboratory incubation tests, was lower for an organic soil which had shown a high nitrogen requirement in the field tests than for one showing a low nitrogen requirement. Potatoes in a newly-cultivated organic soil required no more than 55 pounds of N per acre but in a soil under cultivation for ten years they responded to a higher nitrogen level.
