Summary
Counts in 15 representative seed potato fields in eastern Idaho showed numbers of the green peach aphid,Myzus persicae (Sulzer), to be highest on field margins. Numbers in the centers of the fields averaged less than one-fourth as high. The pattern of leaf roll virus spread showed a close correlation to these aphid distributions.
The plant next to a leaf roll virus infected plant in the same row was highly subject to infection. There was a tendency for spread to be greater along the row than across the rows.
The application of these findings to control of potato leaf roll virus in seed potato fields is discussed.
Resumen
El cómputo conducido sobre 15 sembrios de patatas para semilla, seleccionados por principio representativo, ha revelado que el número de afídidos verdes del melocotón,Myzus persicae (Sulzer), es más elevado en las areas marginales de los sembrios. Se notó una correlatión bastante próxima entre el tipo de distribution que caracteriza el virus encarrujador de hojas y la de este afidido. La plantita ubicada en proximidad de otra ya infectada por ese virus encarrujador de hojas, dentro de la misma hilera, resultó altamente sujeta a ese infection. La tendencia a propagarse se mantuvo más fuerte dentro de las misma hilera, más que entre hilera y otra.
Se discute la utilization de estos resultados para el control del virus encarrujador de hojas en los sembriós de patatas para semilla.
