Abstract

The numerical study of the geostrophic and frictional adjustment of the effluent flow of the Huanghe River is reported in this paper. The depth profiles of the cross sections near the estuary were obtained from data compiled by the Committee on the Conservancy of the Huanghe River. It was found that the depth profile fitted a logarithmic curve very well. The governing equation of the geostrophic and frictional adjustment was obtained from the quasigeostrophic potential vorticity equation with friction and topography terms. The governing equation was solved numerically by Liebmann’s iterative method by applying appropriate boundary conditions. The calculated flow pattern agreed with the observations.
