Some characteristics of the nitrogen-base atmosphere produced by passing an N2-H2O mixture through a hot-charcoal layer

Abstract

A simple method for generating nitrogen-base atmospheres will be introduced in this paper. A nitrogen-base atmosphere with minor constituents of H2 and CO can be prepared by passing commercial grade N2 mixed with some water vapor through a layer of hot charcoal. Steel foils were heated in the nitrogen-base atmospheres produced under different conditions. Based on the surface condition, weight change, and microstructure of the samples after heating, the effect of these nitrogen-base atmospheres on foil carbon content has been studied. The results indicate the following.

(1) Nitrogen-base atmospheres produced in this manner can effectively prevent steels from oxidation for water vapor contents over 0.5 pct. (2) The carbon potential of the nitrogen-base atmospheres increases with the amount of water added. (3) The carbon potential of nitrogen-base atmospheres increases with increasing temperature of charcoal. However, the carbon potential was found nearly constant at charcoal temperatures above 900 °C.
