Abstract

An important function of statistics, as a body of methods, is to help in the summarisation of results of any investigation or experiment in what are called asdescriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics are single numbers that effectively portray essential features of a given group of observations.

In summarising a set of observations on a quantitative variable, two types of descriptive statistics are commonly usedmeasures ofcentral tendency (or location of the centre of the set of data) and measures ofvariability.
