Essential quantum instability of the perturbative Yang-Mills vacuum

Summary

We prove that there exist gauge field configurations whose energy density is lower than that of the perturbative Yang-Mills vacuum by a quantity ΔE4 (Λ is the ultraviolet cut-off) whereb remains finite wheng → 0. This striking physical situation, which prevents the use of perturbation theory even at extremely short distances, is what has been calledessential instability.

Si dimostra l’esistenza di configurazioni dei campi di gauge la oui densità di energia è inferiore a quella del vuoto perturbativo di Yang-Mills di una quantità che diverge come Λ4 (Λ è il taglio ultraviolette). A questa singolare situazione fisica, che impedisce l’uso della teoria perturbativa anche a piccolissime distanze, è stato dato il nome di « instabilità essenziale ».
