On the simulation of a synchro-cyclotron particle beam by means of a light modulator

Summary

In order to investigate the behaviour of conventional plastic scintillator telescopes exposed to a particle beam, their operating conditions can be simulated using light modulated in intensity. By means of ultrasonic standing waves a repetition of short light pulses is obtained, so as to simulate the light emitted by the scintillators during the duty-cycle of a machine. At a pulse repetition-rate of 16 MHz the light pulses present a width at half-amplitude of 11 ns. By splitting the modulated light beam as to hit two or more photomultipliers, it is possible to test the whole electronic equipment related to a telescope.

È stato realizzato un dispositivo per controllare il funzionamento dei telescopi a scintillatore plastico, che permette di riprodurre le condizioni di lavoro in cui essi vengono a trovarsi quando sono esposti ad un fascio di particelle. Mediante un campo ultrasonoro stazionario si ottiene una ripetizione di brevi impulsi di luce, che simula la luce emessa dagli scintillatori durante il ciclo di una macchina. Ad una frequenza di ripetizione di 16 MHz gli impulsi luminosi presentano un’ampiezza a mezza altezza di 11 ns. Suddividendo il fascio di luce modulata, in modo da illuminare contemporaneamente due o più fotomoltiplicatori, è possibile controllare anche i circuiti ad essi collegati.
