Summary
New proofs of the minimax and the maximin theorems for eigenvalues of a semi-bounded self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space are presented in which these theorems are shown to be trivial consequences of even more trivial lemmas. It is claimed that almost all inequalities concerning eigenvalues of such operators which were hitherto supposed to be derivable only through the minimax and the maximin theorems follow directly from the primitive lemmas. The radical simplification achieved is expected to facilitate further development of the subject.
