Abstract

This study purposed to develop experiment-based limiting heights for interior, non-load bearing, cold-formed steel wall panels subjected to uniformly distributed lateral loadings. The composite panel of this study consists of three C-section steel wall studs with gypsum wallboard attached to each flanges of the stud with screws at regular intervals. The limiting heights were evaluated by their deflection and strength (for flexure, shear, and web crippling). Limiting heights for deflection limits ofL/360,L/240, andL/120 (whereL is the height of the wall) were developed over the range of typical design pressures. The experimental results for nominal 0.02in thickness and 12in stud spacings showed limiting heights increases from 6% to 18% compared to the current SSMA tables. Therefore, the procedure used by the SSMA for 12in spacing is conservative in this range.
