On the Σ capture and the Λ-nucleon cross-section

Summary

An interpretation of the data on the capture of Σ^--particles by nuclei of photoemulsion has been attempted on the basis of the independent particle model. In particular it has been found that the probability of the A-particle produced in the capture to remain trapped in the nucleus, and hence the average size of the Σ^- capture star, strongly depends on the mean free path of Λ-particles in nuclear matter. In order to justify the experimental data the Λ-N elastic cross-section at energies around 50 MeV should be about 15 mb.

Sulla base del modello a partioelle indipendenti abbiamo oeroato di interpretare i dati sperimentali sulla cattura di particelle Σ^- dai nuclei di emulsione fotograflica. È risultato tra l’altro che la probabilità che le partieeile Λ prodotte nella cattura rimangano nel nucleo, e quindi la dimensione media delle stelle di cattura dei Σ^-, dipende fortemente dal cammino libero medio delle particelle Λ in materia nucleare. Allo scopo di render conto dei dati sperimentali è opportuno assumere per la sezione di urto elastica Λ-nucleone, ad energie intorno ai 50 MeV, un valore di circa 15 mb.
