Second-order field theory and nonstandard Lagrangians

Summary

We consider a second-order field theory,i.e. one in which the Lagrangian density depends on up to the second-order derivatives of the fields. The main difference with respect to the first-order case appears in the definition of the momenta, as functional rather than ordinary derivatives must be used. We consider also nonstandard Lagrangians, those yielding third-order and second-order field equations. In the last case the physical system can be described by a first-order Lagrangian.

Si considera una teoria di campo del second’ordine, nella quale cioè la densità lagrangiana dipende da derivate dei campi fino al second’ordine. La differenza principale rispetto al caso di prim’ordine appare nella definizione degli impulsi, poiché si devono usare funzionali piuttosto che derivate ordinarie. Si considerano anche lagrangiane non standard, quelle che danno equazioni di campo di terz’ordine e second’ordine. In quest’ultimo caso il sistema fisico può essere descritto da una lagrangiana di primo ordine.

Мы рассматриваем тео рию поля второго порядка, т.е. такую теор ию, в которой плотность Ла гранжиана зависит от производных второго порядка от по лей. Основное отличие от с лучая теории первого порядка возникает при опреде лении моментов, как бункцио налов, а не через обычн ые производные. Мы рассм атриваем нестандартные Лагра нжианы, которые приво дят к полевым уравнениям т ретьего и второго порядков. В по следнем случае физич еская система может быть оп исана с помощью Лагранжиана первого порядка.
