Summary
The States of boson or fermion fields, localized in a finite volumeV, are characterized by the mean values of the field operator products. The states that are considered here are normal and such that these mean values are Gaussian (boson) or anti-Gaussian (fermion) and invariant by an arbitrary change-of-phase origin. They are said to belong toC. For the states ofC, a canonical form of the density operator is explicitly given by use of Mercer’s theorem. This canonical form is shown to be chaotic if the mean values are totally translationally invariant and pseudochaotic otherwise. Moreover the locally normal gauge-invariant quasi-free states of infinite systems are shown to be the limit ofC whenV goes to infinity. As a consequence, the quantum boson characteristic functional associated with such a quasi-free state can be considered as the limit whenV goes to infinity of the boson probabilistic characteristic functional associated with a (pseudo-) chaotic state. Hence, this quantum boson characteristic functional provides aprobabilistic description of (pseudo-) chaotic states whenV goes to infinity.
