Abstract

Administrative training for both top executives and middle managers in service oriented professions becomes more important each day. Middle managers such as unit directors, unit coordinators, staff development officers, workshop managers, regional center supervisors and vocational rehabilitation program directors have come from excellent counseling backgrounds in the St. Louis, Missouri Mental Health Systems. Similarly, individuals with counseling backgrounds have also been accepted in some top administrative positions. Other social science oriented disciplines have recognized the need to add administrative credential programs to their schools, social worker administration, psychiatric nursing administration to mention a few. The authors feel counseling programs should prepare administrative oriented programs to allow counselors to remain such as they progress vertically into administrative roles.
