Implications of the observed electromagnetic mass splittings for the quark model

Summary

Observations suggest i) that in the baryon and pseudoscalar octets magnetic energies are not negligible, whence the quark's charge and magnetization are likely to be roughly as diffuse as the nucleon's; and ii) that either the quark motion is essentially relativistic at least in the baryons, or charge-dependent corrections to the strong quark-quark forces are important.
