Henning Ritter is a German journalist and has worked as a freelance author and translator since the early 1970s. He has published translations of works by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and of a collection of writings by Jacob Burckhardt. Since 1985 he has covered the humanities for theFrankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a prominent German newspaper. This article was first published inDeutschland, and is reprinted by permission of the publisher.
