Matrix elements of the radial-angular factorized harmonic oscillator

Summary

The radial wave functions of the harmonic oscillator are shown to form a basis for representations of the noncompact groupO _2,1 in the schemeSp _6,R ⊃O _2,1 ×SO ₃. The tensor operatorsT ^(k)_q = r^2k, wherek may be integral or half-integral, are shown to transform simply under the action of the group generators and hence the matrix elements ofT ^(k)_q may be calculated. A selection rule similar to that given by Pasternack and Sternheimer for hydrogenic matrix elements is derived. Some differences between the hydrogenic and harmonic-oscillator problems are noted.
