Summary
Admitting that the photon propagator is a representation of the renormalization group, we first determine which specific property of QED is implied by the existence of the G-M-L and C-S equations in perturbation theory. After elucidating the different roles played by the G-M-L and C-S functions, ψ and β, in the determination of the photon propagator, we indicate the conditions under which β(α) is or is not related to its asymptotic behaviour. Taking a global point of view, we show that the nullity of the second member of the C-S equation at infinity is implied by unitarity, except in one special case. The global expression of β(α) leads us to classify the photon propagators into two different classes. In the first, the G-M-L equation gives a faithful representation of their asymptotic behaviour. In the second, which we shall study in detail, the bare charge is a function of α, β(α) ≡0, and the perturbation theory determines fallacious β and ψ functions.
и ? функции.
