An extension of Bloom’s treatment of the spin relaxation in alkali metal vapors

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento (1955-1965)

Summary

The treatment of the spin relaxation of an optically oriented alkali metal vapor given by Bloom is extended to include the effects of spin-exchange collisions in a polarized system. It is shown that if the spin-exchange collision time is short compared to the spin-lattice relaxation time then the system is described by a spin temperature. In this spin temperature approximation the observed signal and the decay of the polarization of the sample are easily related. If the polarization of the sample is not too large it is shown that the observed decay is exponential with a single relaxation time.
