Neutron-proton charge exchange at high energies. A crucial reaction

Summary

The shape of the np → pn dσ/dt is extraordinarily independent of energy throughout the range 1.5 ≲p L ≲ 25 GeV/c, despite the expected competition between π exchange with its associated background and ρ, A2 exchange. Our analysis of this situation predicts a radical change beyondp L = 40 GeV/c if our standard ideas about particle exchange are at all meaningful. We also show that the significant difference found at FNAL between the pp and pn total cross-sections, which probably indicates a break-down of Regge asymptotics, will strongly influence the np → pn reaction. Measurements of high-energy np charge exchange will therefore provide a crucial test for current theoretical ideas.

La forma di dσ/dt per np → pn è straordinariamente indipendente dall’energia in tutto l’intervallo 1.5 ≲p L ≲ 25 GeV/c, malgrado la prevista competizione fra lo scambio di π con il suo fondo associato e lo scambio di ρ, A2. La nostra analisi di questa situazione predice un cambiamento radicale al di sopra dip L = 40 GeV/c, se le nostre abituali idee sullo scambio di particelle hanno qualche significato.
