Summary
A diet survey was conducted on 302 Calcutta and 100 Singur (rural area) pre-school children. Children in Calcutta were found to have a diet adequate in proteins but grossly deficient in calories. Singur pre-school children's diet was adequate in protein which was of inferior quality than taken by their urban counterparts. They also have a grossly deficient calorie intake. The incidence of PCM was found to be about four times more common in Singur than Calcutta.
