Summary
A method is developed to avoid redundance problems which can occur in the description of giant resonances in terms of a single-particle shell model basis. It amounts to describing the nonresonant part of the single-particle scattering in terms of continuous energy states derived in the framework of theR-matrix theory. A formalism which joins such continuous states to the resonant states in an exact description of the complete single-particle scattering process is also displayed.
