Analytical evaluation of threshold between string and zig-zag modes in a crystalline ion beam

Summary

We analytically derive the parameter characterizing the transition from string to zig-zag for a crystalline ion beam. Calculation shows that one obtains the same value as through molecular dynamics simulations. We discuss the reason for the occurrence of the transition.
