Summary
Recent experiments and theoretical conjectures suggest the presence of unusual features in antiproton-proton scattering near elastic threshold. We have analyzed the content of three classes of simplified phenomenological models of\(\overline {\text{p}} \)-p scattering in the very-lowmomentum region (P lab≲350 MeV/c). The models show striking differences in the expected threshold behavior of cross-sections and the slope of the forward scattering peak. We find that the published data strongly favor a class of resonance-dominance models which possess some features of the dual-resonance spectrum. Models with smoothed absorptive amplitudes and those which emphasize structure below threshold would be ruled out. The analysis presented here makes it possible to discriminate between models on the basis of gross features of the data and to interpret systematically the consequences for a choice of model by using new data as they become available. We present a brief discussion of the apparent non-S-wave behavior near threshold in terms of possible longer-range forces in the\(\overline {\text{p}} \)-p system, and discuss the usefulness of several types of further experiments on\(\overline {\text{p}} \)-p in the lowmmomentum region.
