Slope of forward diffraction peaks

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento A (1965-1970)

Summary

A new parametrization which takes into account the analytic structure of the scattering amplitude is used to analyse experimental data on the shape of the diffraction peak in π-p and Kp elastic scattering at high energies and, in particular, to determine the slope parameter. The results are found to be inconsistent with those of the conventional exponential parametrization in a number of cases, although the two parametrizations give equally good fits to the data with similar numbers of parameters. It is found that the experimental values of the slope parameter are subject to much larger uncertaintics than the errors obtained by considering only the conventional parametrization. The results are compared with theoretical unitarity bounds on the slope parameter and on another parameter characterizing the width of the diffraction peak.
