A very cold laser-induced electron beam for studies on the friction force in an electron cooling experiment

Summary

In this paper we study an electron cooling experiment in a quite different thermodynamical regime, with respect to standard experiments. A GaAs photocathode and adiabatic acceleration allow us the construction of a very cold electron beam. In such a beam the longitudinal temperature is lower than the potential energy between two electrons of the beam. The expected behaviour of the friction force, as well as a sketch of the experimental apparatus, with particular emphasis on the laser-induced electron source, are given.

In questo lavoro viene studiato un esperimento di raffreddamento con elettroni in condizioni termodinamiche completamente differenti rispetto a quelle ordinarie. Un fotocatodo ad arseniuro di gallio e un'accelerazione adiabatica si consentono di realizzare un fascio di elettroni ultrafreddo, nel quale la temperatura longitudinale è più bassa dell'energia potenziale tra due elettroni del fascio. Sono riportati l'atteso andamento della forza d'attrito nonché lo schema dell'apparato sperimentale, con particolare riferimento alla sorgente di elettroni.

В этой статье мы исследуем эксперимент по охлаждению электронов при термодинамических условиях, совершенно отличных от стандартных. Фотокатод из арсенала галлия и адиабатическое ускорение позволяют нам получить очень холодный электронный пучок. В таком пучке продольная температура меньше, чем потенциальная энергия между двумя электронами в пучке. В статье приводятся ожидаемое поведение силы трения, а также схема экспериментальной аппаратувы, обращая особое внимание на источник электронов.
