Summary
An approximation, which is introduced in Watson's derivation of the theoretical optical potential, is discussed. This approximation consists of neglecting the projection operator on the target ground state in the equations which define the «single-scattering” matrices. Comparison with the calculations made by Johnston and Watson shows that this approximation is equivalent to neglecting, in the optical-potential expansion, a term which is of second order in the scattering matrices and of order 1/A.
