Gamma cross-sections close to the absorption edge in some bromides

Il Nuovo Cimento A (1965-1970)

Summary

Total cross-sections of gamma-rays in the compounds KBr, RbBr and CsBr were determined at energies 10.676 keV, 13.93 keV, 14.413 keV, 26.345 keV and 59.537 keV with narrow-beam geometry and a HpGe detector. The experimental values in most cases agree with the theoretical values. At gamma energies 13.93 keV and 14.413 keV, which are close to the BrK-absorption edge deviations in the range 3 to 9% were observed. The trend of the deviations suggests the existence of sizeable chemical effects in photon interactions and the inapplicability of the additivity law close to absorption edges.
