Summary
Using the Klein-Gordon equation, we investigate bound states for a composite system consisting of a charged particle orbiting a charged, stationary magnetic dipole. When the Coulomb force is generated by like-sign charges, we find rapidly increasing energy gaps between successively higher bound states, thus qualitatively reproducing a feature of the lepton mass spectrum. Just as we found in a nonrelativistic analysis of a similar model, all of the lower-lying states have zero orbital angular momentum, while all other states have orbital angular momentum of at least eleven. If this feature were present in a realistic composite model of leptons, it would explain why the electron, muon anf τ all have spin 1/2. A mechanism we earlier suggested appears applicable to this model. This mechanism associates lepton number with the radial quantum numbern and may explain the absence or suppression of the decay of a muon into an electron and a photon. Our calculation is performed in two space dimensions.
