Abstract

The class of semihard permanent magnet compositions has been extended to compositions containing molybdenum. Under suitable conditions, these alloys can develop higher coercive forces (>100 oe) and energy products (about 0.5×106) than could be obtained in similar materials before, but they can readily be worked to fine wires (5 mil or less). Coercive forces below the maximum can, of course, be arrived at by adjusting time and temperature of the aging treatment. Over 7 pct Mo was added to Co-Fe alloys; part of the molybdenum could be replaced by titanium. Cold work is necessary to develop precipitation within reasonable times. The new alloys are compared on the basis of their coercive force, residual magnetism, and squareness of the hysteresis curve.
