Spontaneous gastric perforation in the newborn

  • Published:
The Indian Journal of Pediatrics Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary and Conclusion

Two cases of ischaemic perforation of the stomach and duodenum are reported. The various theories and causes of this disease are discussed but the prevailing view favours asphyxia. Prompt diagnosis and early surgical closure of the perforation offers the only chance of survival. As the lesions are ischaemic in origin, it is proposed that these should be grouped under ischaemic perforations and confusing terms like spontaneous perforations should be excluded. All children born with asphyxia or under conditions of stress should be carafully watched for the developing symptoms of perforation.
