Summary
90 cases of heart disease in children were studied from March 1970 to August 1971. The ratio of C.H.D. to R.H.D. was 1.6:1, V.S.D. and T.O.F. were the common individual lesions. The mitral valve was most commonly involved in R.H.D. resulting in mitral insufficiency in 25 cases.
The highest incidence of C.H.D. was seen below 5 years while all our R.H.D. cases were between 6–12 years of age. Male patients were predominant in both congenital and rheumatic heart disease.
Tachycardia, dyspnoea, feeding problem, failure to thrive, repeated infections, cyanosis and clubbing were the common clinical manifestations in congenital heart disease. Palpitation, migrating arthritis, dyspnoea, repeated infections and mitral regurgitation were commonly observed in R.H.D. C.H.F. was the most common complication (13 cases).
Patients with R.H.D. must be advised to get prophylactic antibiotics and any bacterial infection in heart disease patients should be treated promptly to prevent danger of S.B.E. The role of the practising physician in making in early diagnosis of heart disease in children is stressed.
