Summary
This essay suggests an approximate valuation procedure for the calculation of net liabilities of joint life assurances in balance sheets. It amounts to introducing a substitute age by means of which the net liabilities of a joint life assurance are replaced by the net liabilities of a corresponding assurance on only one life. On the assumption that the mortality table used conforms to theGompertz-Makeham law the essay explains the cause of the absolute and relative errors due to the use of this approximate valuation method.
