Summary
1) Udating of policy-files is one of the most frequent, regularly recurring processes in the routine work of an insurance company. The work involved is sometimes considerable; in each case the time-element is of paramount importance. Therefore, the question as to the advisability or otherwise of using date processing machines presents itself.
2) After reviewing the general merging process where two groups of records are concerned, the author shows that the various methods of updating can be reduced to specialised merging procedures. Four different methods of updating—each one more general than the preceding one—are analysed, and appropriate flow charts designed.
3) It is shown that updating can be combined with other routine work, such as the compilation of statistics relating to the movement of business or policies in force; with premium billing, or with the calculation of life policy reserves.
4) In an appendix the author codes the most general updating process by applying a slightly generalised code of a specimen machine as proposed by R. K. Richards: Arithmetic Operations in Digital Computers, Princeton, N.J. 1955, p. 355.
