Summary
Measurements have been made of the transition effect of the extensive air showers of cosmic rays in absorbers of lead, iron, carbon and water. The results indicate that the photons of the showers are predominantly of lower energies than are the electrons, and forms of the energy spectra for the two components incident on the counter trays are deduced. The discrepancy between the absorption of the showers in air and in local absorbers of similar atomic weight, such as carbon and water, is briefly discussed.
