Interaction mean free path of the particles emitted in cosmic ray nuclear explosions

Summary

The measurements of the interaction mean free path of the near minimum ionizing particles emitted in cosmic ray nuclear explosions are discussed. A new determination of this mean free path has been made at mountain altitude, using a counter controlled cloud chamber containing thin lead foils. The result is 200±25% g cm−2 Pb.

Vengono discusse le misure del cammino libero medio, per interazione nucleare, della particelle vicino al minimo di ionizzazione emesse nelle esplosioni nucleari osservate nella radiazione cosmica. Si riconosce che le selezioni strumentali dei dispositivi usati in precedenti misure con camere di Wilson possono aver reso troppo incerto il risultato. Una nuova determinazione del suddetto cammino medio libero è stata fatta alla quota di 3500 m s.l.m., con una camera di Wilson contenente fogli sottili di Piombo. Il valore ottenuto (200±25% g cm−2 Pb) è in soddisfacente accordo con i recenti risultati diCamerini et al. e diBarker eButler.
