Summary
One hundred and ten cases of diarrhoea in children of different age groups were studied. In addition to the microscopic examination of stools, bacterial culture was done in 97 cases. Twelve cases were proved to be due toEl tor vibrio cholera.E. coli was the commonest organism isolated from the stool culture, but serotyping was not done. In 14 cases, parasites were present along withE. coli and other bacteria. All the cases were treated with Sofrakay.
An excellent response was obtained in 44 cases and a good result in 41 cases. In 14 cases where parasites were associated, the initial result was good but recurrence occurred within 7 days Eleven cases did not respond to the treatment. The drug was well tolerated by all the patients.
In this study, there was no attempt made to have any control groups on other drugs or without any drug.
Soframycetin sulphate (Sofrakay Roussel) is a useful drug in the management of bacterial diarrhoeas and cholera in children without any side effects when given orally. This drug can be prescribed safely even to neonates, if necessary.
