Abstract
The conditions for the formation of an effective photon mass in a strong magnetic field are considered. It is shown that massless photons are sterile. The channels γ* → e+e− and γ* → vivi for the decay of a massive photon and their possible contribution to the mechanism of energy losses by collapsing astrophysical objects are discussed.
