Additional information

The article is adapted from a chapter in Ralph Andreano’s new book,No Joy in Mudville (Schenkman Publishing Co., Inc., Cambridge). His thesis is that the preeminence and appeal of baseball have declined as the “Folk Hero” image of players has declined, and as baseball commercialization has become more open. Professor Andreano is chairman of the department of economics at Earlham College.
