Summary
In the nonlinear theory of elementary particles by Heisenberg and coworkers it was suggested that the observed deviations from isotopic spin symmetry in the interactions of elementary particles may result from a degeneracy of the vacuum with respect to isotopic spin. The vacuum in this formalism can be imagined as an infinite Lorentz,CPT andGP-invariant sea of spurions. Strange particles occur in such a theory in the form of particles which are closely coupled to one or more spurions. To test this hypothesis about the vacuum, especially with respect to its group-theoretical assumptions on the spurions, we investigate in the present paper as a simple model a nucleon Dirac equation which is modified through the addition of nucleon-spurion or nucleon-two spurion interaction terms which are possible under the stated symmetry requirements. The model allows the definition of the concept « strangeness », and leads to definite predictions as to the existence and mass sequence of strange particles of strangeness ±1 and ±2, and their relative parities. The absolute-mass values of these particles depend on certain coupling parameters, which have to be introduced from the beginning, and cannot be calculated within the framework of this model.
