Elastic scattering of 7 gev/c π-mesons on protons

Summary

The differential cross-section for the elastic scattering of 7 GeV/c pions on protons was investigated in a 24-liter propane bubble chamber. 508 elastic scatterings of π--mesons on free protons were selected from two-prong events and the differential cross-section measured for cos θcms < 0.995. By making use of the optical theorem to account for the forward scattering the total elastic cross-section was estimated to be (5.13 +0.40-0.54 ) mb. The shape of the differential cross-section is compared with the theoretical predictions of Domokos (8).

Si è studiata la sezione d‘urto differenziale per lo scattering elastico di pioni di 7 GeV/c su protoni in una camera a bolle a propano di 24 litri. Si sono scelti fra gli eventi a due rami 508 scattering elastici di mesoni π- su protoni liberi e si è misurata la sezione d‘urto differenziale per cos θcms < 0.995. Facendo uso del teorema ottico per tener conto dello scattering in avanti, si è stimato che la sezione d‘urto elastica totale valga (5.15 +0.40-0.54 ) mb. Si confronta l‘andamento della sezione d‘urto differenziale con le predizioni teoriche di Domokos (8).
