Summary
A potential model is used to study the low-energy behavior of the two-baryon system in theJ P=(1)+ state. The potential is constructed from the sum of Yukawa potentials due to the exchange of low-lying pseudoscalar and vector-meson octets. The relative coupling constants are fixed bySU 3 symmetry. The baryon pairs that we consider belong to the\(\overline {10} \) and 8 a representations ofSU 3. In addition to the meson exchange interaction we consider a hard-core interaction in both\(\overline {10} \) and 8 a states with different radii. The radius of the hard core for the\(\overline {10} \) representation is fixed by fitting the tripletNN scattering length. Several values of the hard core for the 8 a representations are used. They yield values for theAN scattering length that are within the experimental range. A singularity is found in theAN scattering amplitude. If one uses the ansatz thatSU 3 is broken only by the difference of the meson and baryon masses from their degenerate values, the motion of this singularity is studied as a function of anSU 3 symmetry breaking parameter. In this way, it is found that the pole in theAN amplitude which corresponds to the deuteron in theNN amplitude appears as a resonance just below the ΣN threshold.
