Summary
The incidence of anencephalus was 3 per 1000 births which is significantly higher than that in reports of Asian populations.
It was observed that maternal age, parity and blood group have a definite relation with the incidence of anencephalus. A high incidence was found in mothers between the ages of 20 and 30 years; in first, second and third para; and in mothers who belonged to the O blood group. Hydramnios was found in 40 per cent, antepartum haemorrhage in 27 per cent and abortions in 30 per cent.
The preponderance of female over male was not very marked, the ratio being 1∶6 to 1. Anencephalic babies were conceived 2 times more often in the summer months than in the winter months. Anencephaly was associated with other gross congenital malformation which were quite frequent and diverse such as spina bifida, umbilical and diaphragmatic hernia, hydronephrosis and unicornuate uterus.
