Lead encephalopathy

Summary

A case of lead encephalopathy in a one-year-old male child is reported The presenting symptoms were recurrent gastroenteritis, generalised convulsions and anaemia of six months’ duration. The child had been living in an environment contaminated with lead.

Investigations revealed elevated blood and urine lead concentrations. Roentgenography of the long bones revealed dense lead lines in the metaphyses. The child was treated with BAL. The child died of an intercurrent severe bronchopneumonia a few days later.
