The quantization of gravitational charge and the value of the fine-structure constant

Summary

An approximate algebraic equation for the fine-structure constant α is deduced, the solution of which, accurate to the second degree in α, gives a numerical value very close to 137.036−1. This equation is derived from the quantization conditionGm 2=1/4ℏc for the square of the gravitational chargeG 1/2m of a basic particle. These same considerations lead to the correct value for the ratio of the proton mass to the electron mass. From the expression obtained from this ratio one derives a new dimensionless constant (G 1/2/21/3)m ec/e 3, which gives the fraction of its mass which each constituent quark contributes to the mass of the proton.
