Summary
Recognition, causes and principles of management of heart failure in infants have been presented. The initial symptoms and signs are subtle. If proper attention is paid, early recognition of congestive failure is possible, The commonest cause in this age group is congenital heart disease and heart failure appears in the first few months of life. The management consists not only in the control of heart failure but also in a careful evaluation of the cause. Surgery—curative or palliative—should be utilized as early as feasible. Early recognition and referral to centres specially geared for providing medical and surgical care is essential if the salvage rate is to be improved.
