Asymmetric fission at relativistic energies

Summary

High-energy Coulomb excitation can provide a complement of vibration energy to nuclear diclusteric molecules which otherwise could not evolve towards scission. This explains why238U can fission asymmetrically in peripheral collisions with lead.
